The Shanghai International Film Festival (上海國際電影節) awarded its top prize to a Turkish film and also recognised Chinese and Thai film-makers.
Twelve of the sixteen films received no award from the jury headed by Barry Levinson.
Orhan Oguz's Turkish drama Hayde Bre won best feature and best actor for Sevket Emrulla as a father who reluctantly travels to Istanbul after the death of his wife to live with his daughter and grandchildren. The jury described it as a "stark, honest, unflinching look at a mother dealing with a modern world and her separation from her rural background."
The Jury Grand Prix was awarded to Han Jie's (韓杰) Mr Tree (Hello! 樹先生), in which a nobody becomes an unexpected prophet in a village in Northeast China that has been deserted when the coal mines dried up. Han also won the director prize for "being clear and understandable with a complex theme while staying subtle to avoid being simplistic."
Another film by a Chinese director secured three prizes. Zhang Ming's (章明) awkwardly titled The Young Man Sings Folk Song in the Opposite Door (郎在對門唱情歌) secured awards for its screenplay (Zhang), music (Wen Zi, 文子) and actress (Lü Xingchen, 呂星辰).
From Thailand, Yuthlert Sippapak's (ยุทธเลิศ สิปปภาค) Friday Killer (มือปืน ดาว พระ ศุกร์) won the Jury Award, the first prize of the evening, and was also recognised for Tiwa Moeithaisong's (ทิวา เมยไธสง) cinematography. The jury described it as "a colorful, atmospheric, good-looking gangster epic paying open tribute to Quentin Tarantino".
The closing ceremony was more glamorous than in recent years. Stars walking the red carpet included Matsuyama Kenichi (松山ケンイチ), Vivian Hsu (徐若瑄), Guy Pearce, Miriam Yeung (楊千嬅), Huang Bo (黃渤), Kara Hui (惠英紅), Wang Baoqiang (王寶強) and Ploy Jindachot (พลอย จินดาโชติ) in addition to jury members Paz Vega and Zhang Jingchu (張靜初).
